Lawrence Martin For Mayor
MEET LAWRENCE MARTIN
Experience. Leadership. A Vision for Everyone.
Lawrence Martin is a respected Cree leader from the Moose Cree First Nation whose life has been dedicated to public service, advocacy, and community leadership. Throughout an extraordinary career spanning municipal government, Indigenous governance, communications, healthcare, and the arts, he has remained committed to building stronger communities and creating opportunities for First Nations people.
A trailblazer in municipal politics, Lawrence made history in 1991 when he became the first Indigenous person in Ontario elected mayor of a municipality outside a First Nation, serving the community of Sioux Lookout. He later served as mayor of Cochrane, making him one of the few leaders in Canada to have been elected mayor of two different municipalities.
Lawrence also served two terms as Grand Chief of the Mushkegowuk Council, where he championed the rights and interests of First Nations communities across Northern Ontario. His leadership has focused on advancing reconciliation, protecting the environment, supporting sustainable economic development, and advocating for improved housing, infrastructure, education, and healthcare for Indigenous peoples.
